Trip Itinerary

Day 1                          Depart U.S.A:

Leave the U. S. on your overnight flight to Cairo, Egypt!

 Day 2                         Arrive Cairo

Arrive in Cairo!  Cairo is a fascinating window into the contemporary as well as Pharaonic or Coptic Middle East, and the heart of the Islamic world for 1400 years. It is also a huge, vibrant city, one of the largest and liveliest cities in Africa and the Middle East. Meet your Tour Manager and fellow travelers tonight in the hotel at 7pm. The remainder of time is yours’ to enjoy your first evening in this magnificent city and to get to know your fellow travelers.

Day 3               Cairo to Aswan

Guided tour of the Egyptian Museum, then to Giza to see the Pyramids.  Enjoy this full day of memorable sights!  There are three main pyramids in Giza; the Great Pyramid of Khufu (or Cheops), The Pyramid of Kafhre and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaura. Each Pyramid is a tomb to a different King of Egypt and in front of the pyramids lies the Sphinx, the enormous cat-like sculpture that has fascinated millions of visitors.  Of all of Egypt’s monuments, The Sphinx (Carved out of a single block of stone), is probably the most majestic.  It was named because of its physical similarity to a mythical creature with a lion's body and woman's head who devoured passers-by unable to answer her riddle. Arabs know it as Abu el-Hol (Father of Terror). Carved out of a limestone outcropping in front of the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx is 50 meters long and 22 meters high.

The Egyptian Museum houses over 120,000 objects, including the mummies of Egyptian pharoahs, sarcophagi, sculptures and furniture. Dinner together tonight.  Tonight a train ride overnight to Aswan. (B,D)

Day 4              Nile Cruise-Aswan

Relax during your ride to this next ancient city.  Arriving in Aswan mid-morning we view the unfinished obelisk and visit the High Dam. We sail on a felucca to the Botanical Gardens before joining our cruise ship for a sumptuous lunch.  Aswan, Egypt's sunniest southern city and ancient frontier town located about 81 miles south of Luxor, has a distinctively African atmosphere.  Small enough to walk around and graced with the most beautiful setting on the Nile, the pace of life is slow and relaxing. In Aswan the Nile is at its most beautiful, flowing through amber desert and granite rocks, round emerald islands covered in palm groves and tropical plants. (B,L,D)

Day 5               Nile Cruise - Aswan to Edfu

This morning, why not join our fantastic excursion to Abu Simbel - the most complete example of ancient Egyptian architecture? Built by Pharaoh Ramses II more than 3,000 years ago, the temples were moved over a period of years to their new site safely above the waters of Lake Nasser. After lunch, we cruise to Kom Ombo to view this unique temple, shared by two Gods. We reach Edfu, where we spend the night on-board.  (B,L,D)

Day 6              Nile Cruise – Edfu to Luxor

Leisurely sail along the Nile River and visit Edfu’s Temple of Horus, Egypt's best preserved temple dedicated to Horus, the Falcon God.

Edfu is located on the west bank of the River Nile between Esna and Aswan.  While in Edfu, we’ll visit the Temple to Horus.  Of all the temple remains in Egypt, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is the most completely preserved. Built from sandstone blocks, the huge Ptolemaic temple was constructed over the site of a smaller New Kingdom temple, oriented east to west, facing towards the river. The later structure faces north to south and leaves the ruined remains of the older temple Pylon (architecture) to be seen on the east side of the first court.

Casting off, we spend the afternoon on-board watching Upper Egypt slip by. We arrive in Luxor (the ancient city of Thebes) in time to view the temple of Luxor. (B,L,D)

Day 7               Luxor to Cairo

You are set for an amazing day of visiting two of the world’s most incredible sights, the

Valley of the Kings, where King Tut’s tomb was discovered, and the sacred Temple of Karnak.

Luxor has often been called the world’s greatest open-air museum, as indeed it is and much more. The number and preservation of the monuments in the Luxor area are unparalleled anywhere else in the world.

Later, we board our overnight train to Cairo.  (B,L,D)

Day 8               Cairo

After breakfast, first we visit Sakkara to see the oldest pyramid in the world, the Step Pyramid. We continue on to the Citadel, Alabaster Mosque and Sultan Husan Mosque before spending our final evening together. (B,D)

Day 9                          Depart Cairo

Fond farewells this morning as our tour ends after breakfast. (B)
