A little about your vacation—
The
Galapagos Islands, made up of 13 large islands,
six smaller islands and over 40 islets, are located in the Pacific
Ocean 600 miles west of the Ecuadorian mainland. Its wonders span
from the most varied geological formations of lava flows, blowholes,
spatter cones and lava tunnels to beaches of olive, white, or black
sand, and the most diverse landscapes and species of animal and
plant life.
On some islands you will find red
mangroves, scalesia trees and acacias, while on others you will see
cactus, micronias and Palo Santo trees. The most surprising sights
for visitors, however, are the animals, which astounded Charles
Darwin on his visit in 1835 and he used what he saw to construct his
theory of evolution. Some of these animals cannot be found anywhere
else on earth! The giant land turtles gave the archipelago its name
and are just some of the species unique to the islands, as are the
Galapagos penguins, Darwin finch, hawk and marine iguana. You will
also see Blue-footed Boobies, Swallow-tailed Gulls, bright Yellow
Warblers, fur seals, sea lions, frigate birds and free-roaming
albatross.
Our group will explore the islands on
our chartered yacht just for our group, see many different animals
and vegetation, visit The
Charles Darwin Research Institute, have a Galapagos BBQ, have a
chance to snorkel the beautiful waters surrounding these Islands and
so much more……!

Land and Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 Wed. June 4
Depart your hometown to Quito, Ecuador
Fly in
to Quito, Ecuador from your home city to start your adventure!
You’ll be met outside of customs and immigration by our local guide
and transferred to our hotel where we’ll be staying for the next 3
nights at the Dann Carlton Hotel. Depending on the time you get in,
there will be a casual welcome get together to meet your fellow
travelers and your Singles Travel Company representative and then
dinner will be at leisure with others from the group. Start
exploring!
Day 2 Thurs. June 5
Touring Quito
and the “Middle of the World”
After breakfast, our exploration begins with a
private guided tour of colonial Quito, the “Middle of the World” and
the Equatorial Monument. During the tour of Quito, see cobble-stoned
streets, busy plazas, elegant cathedrals, Quito’s oldest monastery,
the Legislative Palace and enjoy the view of the surrounding
mountains. Next we take a short drive north of the city to the “must
see” site of the “Middle of the World” monument and visitor complex,
where visitors can step between the world’s hemispheres in the blink
of an eye. You’ll have fun taking pictures as you cross from one
hemisphere to another at the equator.
Return
to your hotel in the afternoon. The rest of the day we can continue exploring this wonderful city. Bustling Avenida Amazonas, the
showpiece street of modern Quito, is a good place to stop in a
sidewalk cafe and watch life go by. If we didn’t see the following
places earlier on the tour we will have some time to visit them,
such as the House of Culture, the University, the Legislative
Palace, and Alameda Park. Also, if time, see the highlights of
charming colonial Quito, including Independence Square, La Ronda,
and La Compania.
This
evening we will enjoy a ‘welcome dinner’ in a local restaurant in
Quito. Then the evening is at leisure to enjoy the local night
scene with new friends from the group.
(B, D)
Quito, the capital of Ecuador is
arguably the most beautiful city in South America. Located 2850m
(9350ft) above sea level and just 22km (14mi) south of the equator,
it boasts a wonderful spring-like climate in a spectacular setting.
Vistas in Quito are dominated by mountains, with several snowcapped
volcanoes standing sentinel in the distance; the city itself sits at
the foot of 4700m (15,400ft). Architecturally, Quito has plenty of
colonial treasures, and modern building has been strictly controlled
in the old town since 1978, when it was declared a world cultural
heritage site by UNESCO. The old center is full of whitewashed
houses, red tiled roofs and colonial churches, with no flashing neon
to disrupt the ambience of the past. The northern part of the city
is the new town, containing modern offices, embassies, shopping
centers and airline offices.
Day 3
Friday June 6
Quito/ Otavalo Indian Market
Your highlight today is an excursion to the Indian Market. The Indian
fairs
and markets of Ecuador are a perfect illustration of this relatively
small Andean country’s vast cultural wealth, stunning geography and
its happy and colorful people. Markets are traditional places for
people to come and meet, shop, haggle and gossip, while local native
tribes trade foodstuffs, animals, utensils, pans, textiles and all
kinds of other items. For the foreign visitor, the Indigenous
markets provide a great way to get closer to the Ecuadorians, while
bargaining over the price of a sweater or panpipe and enjoy the
fruit of their industrious hands in their multifarious crafts.
The
Indian Market of Otavalo is the most famous and colorful in all of
South America. Your guide will meet you in your hotel lobby
for a morning departure towards the scenic roads northeast of Quito.
The drive takes under two hours and passes by the dramatic Avenue of
the Volcanoes. Enroute, you will also visit the Imbabura Province,
known as the Lake District of Ecuador. Also see the Plaza de los
Ponchos, where beautiful textiles of cotton and wool made in local
workshops fill the square and surrounding streets with color and
life.
We
arrive in Otavalo, often called the Persia of South America, to find
the market bustling. Otavalenos sell their goods throughout Ecuador,
but you will find the best selection and prices here. Otavalo
Indians are an aristocratic society and highly skilled weavers. The
market stalls sell every kind of craft, from wood carvings and naif
paintings to Panama hats and jewelry, to woolen rugs, wall hangings,
and knit and embroidered clothing, to name but a few items. You will
have time to visit the Friday Otavalo Indian market, filled with
Otavalo Indians wearing blue ponchos, white trousers and long
braided hair. Lunch is included and will be served at a real
colonial hacienda. In the afternoon, bid farewell to Otavalo and
begin your journey back to Quito and to your hotel. (B, L)
Day 4 Sat. June 7
Fly from Quito to Baltra & Transfer to Hotel on Santa Cruz Island
This morning, our local personal English-speaking
guide will meet us in the hotel lobby for the transfer to the Quito
airport for our flight to the islands to begin our Galapagos
adventure! Upon arrival in Baltra, we’ll be transferred to the
local hotel in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island for a one night
hotel stay for an up-close view of one of the islands. Santa Cruz
Island is known for its’gigantic tortoises, flora and beautiful
landscapes and it is one of the populated Islands in the
Archipelago.
You’ll
enjoy the town of Puerto Ayora, located in
the center of the Galapagos Islands archipelago and the
largest settlement in the Galapagos Islands-you can buy souvenirs,
mail postcards, and absorb local charm in the social heart of the
islands.
The hub of most activity in the Galapagos, Puerto Ayora is a
charming port town where sea, sun, seabirds and sailboats coexist in
happy equilibrium.
After check-in, we’ll be transferred to the main
dock in Puerto Ayora to meet our excursion boat. The captain will
take us out of the bay towards the lighthouse at Punta Estrada to
view swooping blue-footed boobies, frigate
birds, herons and frolicking sea
lions.
We’ll continue into Shark Bay to be able to spot
rays and sea turtles and observe white-tipped reef sharks. At the
entrance to Academy Bay, off a small islet, you will have the
opportunity to join a colony of playful sea lions in the water and
perfect your ‘sea lion rolls’! Snorkel equipment, life vests and
chilled drinks are provided on boat.
Tonight enjoy a special Galapagos BBQ party to
welcome us to the Galapagos Islands! (B,D)
Day 5 Sun. June 8
Transfer to the Motor
Yacht Coral II-
Highlands on Santa Cruz Island
Early
this morning after breakfast and before we board out yacht, we visit
the The Charles Darwin Research Institute. This is a scientific and
educational foundation honoring and extending the scientific
revolution brought on by one of the greatest figures in the history
of human thought-Charles Darwin. It is dedicated to furthering the
Darwinian perspective in the behavioral sciences and it supports
research in traditional fields also.
After
our visit we are transferred to our private, chartered, Motor Yacht
Coral II, to begin our 3 night chartered yacht cruise through
Darwin’s “Enchanted Islands”. Accommodations throughout our yacht
feature private bathrooms and air-conditioning. All meals,
lectures, shore excursions and cultural programs led by category “3”
naturalist guides are included! Our chartered yacht
has all the commodities of a nice cruise ship, yet it is a lot
smaller to provide a more intimate experience with nature.
Once on board and settled in your cabin, start exploring the
ship and enjoying your cruise!
This
afternoon we visit the Highlands on Santa Cruz Island. You’ll
see the islands’ most famous reptile: the
giant tortoises in their wild habitat. Also here is where
amazing encounters with woodpecker finches (Darwin’s finches) have
occurred
and the vermilion
flycatcher shows its scarlet feathers against an emerald green
forest. Moist conditions keep this epiphyte-laden environment with a fresh
green look. There is also a bizarre Scalesia forest (related to
sunflowers) and the wild tortoise sanctuary. On a clear day you are
assured spectacular views of the sea and neighboring islands. (B,
L, D)
Day 6 Mon. June 9
Galapagos Adventure
Cruising-Suarez Point-Gardner Bay, Espanola Island
After breakfast we continue our adventure with an AM
visit to the Suarez Point, Espanola Island.
Espanola Island (also
known as Hood Island) is a relative flat Island, only small hills
are evident. Even though it is at the southern most point of the
archipelago (and the most isolated), it is one of the most popular
islands to visit because of the wide variety of animals found on the
island and nowhere else in the archipelago. The main characteristic
of the Island is the waved albatross, it is the only colony in the
Galapagos. The main points of visit are Suarez Point and Gardner
Bay.
The
best visitor site on the island is Suarez Point. The animals
on this Island are larger than any other Island. You’ll
learn about the lava terrain and along the lava trail Blue- footed
boobies lay their eggs (this is the largest colony of Blue-footed
Boobies in the Islands) and iguanas sunbathe on the rocks. This is
also one of the best sites for bird watching and to see the most
impressive colonies of sea birds in all of the Galapagos Islands.
You’ll
see the hooded mockingbird, red-billed tropicbird, Galapagos doves,
hawks and swallow-tailed gulls. You’ll also see the world’s largest
colony of waved albatross (about 15,000), their mating rituals are a
highlight. This bird is the largest bird on the Islands.
The
Island also has large colonies of marine iguanas, lava lizards and
the colorful Sally light foot crabs. You may also visit the famous
blowhole, where water shoots into the air at almost seventy-five
feet from the waves crashing into the island.
This
afternoon we visit Gardner Bay, Espanola Island on the
eastern side of the Island. With it white sandy beaches it is great
for swimming and snorkeling. If you snorkel you may see turtles and
sharks amongst the beautiful fish in the area.
This site has no trails,
but is considered an open area where you can spot Galapagos hawks,
American oystercatchers, and Galapagos doves, three species of
finches, yellow warblers, lava lizards and marine iguanas.
Tonight, relax after dinner on the deck, enjoy the stars, and trade
stories with your fellow passengers. (B, L, D)
Day 7 Tues. June 10
Galapagos Adventure Cruising-Cormorant Point and Post Office Bay,
Floreana Island
After
breakfast on board our ship we head out again for another
fascinating day of adventure in the Galapagos Islands.
Floreana Island has 80
residents (one of the three populated islands in the Galapagos) and
some of the more interesting natural attractions in the Islands.
The main characteristic of the Island is the flamingos“ lagoon, and
its history. It
has a
colorful history, having been a stopping place for pirates, whalers
and settlers. The main
points to visit: Cormorant Point, Post Office Bay and the Devil's
Crown.
In the
AM we’ll visit Cormorant Point on Floreana Island. Cormorant
Point has us landing on a green colored sand beach. The green
color is due to the accumulation of olivine crystal material.
We’ll hike a well-marked trail beginning in the black mangrove beds
heading toward the back of the lagoon. This lagoon holds one of the
biggest populations of flamingos in the Galįpagos. This island is
also known for its endemic plant life, such as the Galįpagos
millwork, passionflower, and button mangrove. Sea turtles also have
a nesting site here. Snorkelers can snorkel on the main beach where
the sea lions are playful, or more experienced snorkelers can roam
the waters around Devils Crown.
In the
PM we’ll visit Post Office Bay on Floreana Island.
In 1793 a "post office" was established
by an English whaler–they used a woodened barrel to put their mail
in and sailors passing would take it to North America or Europe. In
the 1930’s a German family settled near Post Office Bay and they
still live on the island. The barrel is still in use, and you can
drop your letters and postcards in to be sent anywhere in the world.
Behind the post office are lava tubes which you can enter by
ladders.
Tonight, we enjoy dinner on our yacht
and relax with the group.
(B,
L, D)
After breakfast we visit
North Seymour Island to see land iguanas; the largest
colony of the Magnificent Frigate birds; a nesting colony for
the Blue footed-boobies; swallow tailed gulls and the coastline
which has plenty of sea lions.
The
Magnificent Frigatebird, known for the large red pouch on its’ neck,
is a large black bird with a long wingspan, and a hooked beak. It
is extremely fast and has excellent vision. During mating season the
males thrown back their heads, inflate the pouch (sometimes to the
size of a soccer ball), and shake trying to capture the attention of
female Frigates.
Boobies
and Frigates share the same nesting area on North Seymour, which
makes for an interesting relationship. The Blue- Footed Boobies nest
on the ground making their nests from the twigs of the Palo Santos
Trees, while the Magnificent Frigate bird nests just above them in
the saltbushes.
Afterward, we’ll transfer to the Baltra airport for our return
flight to mainland Ecuador. We return to our hotel, Dann Carlton
Hotel, in the late afternoon for one last night together in Quito.
Enjoy last minute shopping and exploring and maybe a farewell
dinner tonight to celebrate the end to a fabulous vacation with the
group! (B, D)
Day 9 Thurs. June 12
Quito/ US return
This
morning we transfer early to the airport for our flight home! The
end of a wonderful adventure and new friends to share the memories
with after the trip! (B)
Galapagos Facts
-
Blessed by their isolation from the mainland and their equatorial
location, the Galapagos Islands are beautiful all year through,
making it so there is no single time of year that is better than
another for visiting. Cruises operate on a year round basis.
Temperatures (max high for June is 78/ low is 68, average sea temp
is 74 degrees) are determined almost entirely by the ocean currents
that are influenced by the trade winds. Most birds nest year round,
so you can see courtship, mating, chicks hatching and rearing almost
any time of the year.
